4 Weeks to Save Sheffield's Green Belt

Sheffield Council plans to release almost all of S13's Green Belt for development. We have four weeks to say no.

The Government Inspectors examining the Sheffield Plan are currently consulting on the Main Modifications - the final proposed changes before the Plan can be adopted.

Two of those modifications would formally insert major Green Belt developments into the Plan, including the sites affecting S13.

This consultation is very technical and narrow. That means a focused, clear message from the community carries far more weight than hundreds of rushed or unfocused responses.

That is why we are launching a city-wide petition.

Download and print the petition - collect signatures from friends, family and neighbours, or sign it online.

1. Why Are We Doing This?

Many people want to respond to the consultation, but the documents are highly technical planning material. Even experienced readers can struggle to understand exactly what can and cannot be commented on.

One supporter recently summed it up perfectly: this is a very specific, narrow consultation, and a focused, well-targeted comment carries far more weight than a rushed one.

Rather than expecting every resident to work through complex planning documents, this petition allows people to support a clear, collective message to the Inspectors.

It is simple. It is focused. And it shows how many people across Sheffield oppose the loss of Green Belt land.

2. What Will Happen To The Petition?

The petition will be submitted to the Government Inspectors as part of the Sheffield Green Belt Alliance response to the Main Modifications consultation.

This submission becomes part of the official examination record.

By gathering signatures from across the city we can demonstrate clearly that opposition to unnecessary Green Belt release is not limited to one street or one area.

The petition will therefore be submitted alongside the community's technical planning submissions as evidence of the scale of public concern about the loss of Sheffield's Green Belt.

The Inspectors must consider every representation submitted during this consultation. Every signature strengthens that message.

3. What Do We Need You To Do?

The single most useful thing you can do is download and print a copy of the petition form and collect a few signatures from friends, family or neighbours.

Paper signatures collected in the community carry real weight. Even one sheet with five or ten names helps show the strength of feeling across Sheffield.

If you are not able to collect paper signatures, you can still sign the petition online and share the page with others.

4. Need A Paper Copy?

If you do not have access to a printer, you can:

Completed paper petition forms can also be returned to the same locations above.

You can also sign the petition online if that is easier.

5. This Is A Sheffield-Wide Effort
Sheffield Green Belt Alliance

This campaign is not just about one neighbourhood.

Groups across the city are working together in the Sheffield Green Belt Alliance to oppose unnecessary Green Belt loss.

The petition page is currently hosted on the wider campaign website used by groups in Chapeltown, Ecclesfield and Grenoside.

Together we can show the Inspectors that this issue matters to communities across the whole city.

6. Share It Widely

The success of this effort depends on how many people we can reach.

Please share the petition with:

They do not need to live in S13. The Sheffield Plan affects the entire city.

7. Why Does This Matter Now?

The consultation deadline is 5pm on Monday 14th April 2026.

That gives us just four weeks to show the strength of feeling across Sheffield.

After this consultation closes, the Inspectors will write their final report on the Plan. This is the last formal opportunity for the public to influence that decision.

We have four weeks to save Sheffield's Green Belt.

Please sign the petition, print a copy if you can, and ask others across the city to do the same.
