Brownfield Sites: We Need You!

S13 residents know how precious our local Green Belt is. That’s why we are proud to support our neighbours in the Save Chapeltown, Ecclesfield & Grenoside (CEG) group in their campaign to identify alternative places for development.

Instead of building over open countryside and farmland, we want previously developed land to be properly considered first.

If you know of a vacant, derelict, underused or previously developed site in Sheffield, please help us bring it forward.

Why this matters

During the Sheffield Local Plan hearings, the Council indicated that it does not have the resources to assess every possible plot of land across the city. As a result, communities are often told there is "no reasonable alternative" to releasing Green Belt.

We believe that claim should be tested properly.

If suitable brownfield sites exist but are never submitted, mapped or assessed, they risk being overlooked - and irreversible decisions may then be made about Green Belt release on an incomplete picture.

What kind of sites should be reported?

Please report any site that appears to be:

Even small sites can make a difference. A number of modest sites across the city can add up to a significant alternative to building on Green Belt.

Who should respond?

This is open to anyone with local knowledge.

Landowners in particular are encouraged to come forward so their sites can be considered before permanent decisions are taken about Sheffield’s remaining Green Belt.

What information is needed?

The form is straightforward. As much detail as you can provide is helpful, including:

  1. Site name or description
  2. Address or location
  3. Postcode, if known
  4. Ownership details, if known
  5. Photos, if you have them

Don’t worry if you do not know everything. A partial submission is still useful if it helps identify land that may otherwise be missed.

Deadline

Please submit sites by Friday 10 April 2026.

The sooner sites are identified, the better the chance they can be considered as part of the wider case for a brownfield-first approach.

Sheffield should regenerate vacant and previously developed land before sacrificing open countryside.

Let’s work together to identify better alternatives and keep our Green Belt green.
